About Us

A Short History of the Mokolodi Nature Reserve

The creation of the Mokolodi Wildlife Foundation led to the establishment of the Mokolodi Nature Reserve in 1994, on 3,700 hectares of donated bushveld land that had previously been utilised for cattle farming. Today, the reserve is home to a rich diversity of animal and plant species endemic to south-eastern Botswana, including several that are rare or endangered.

Since its establishment, Mokolodi Nature Reserve and its programmes have grown significantly. The reserve currently employs approximately 70 people, the majority of whom are from neighbouring communities, reflecting its strong commitment to local empowerment and community development.

Through its Education Centre, Mokolodi hosts more than 9,000 school children annually, delivering impactful environmental education programmes that inspire the next generation of conservationists. In addition, the reserve welcomes over 60,000 visitors each year.

Leadership

Mokolodi Nature Reserve is guided by a dedicated Board committed to its conservation and education mission.

After more than three decades of dedication, leadership, and unwavering support, Dr Ian Kirby and Mrs Gwithie Kirby stepped down from their roles in December, marking the close of an extraordinary chapter in Mokolodi’s history. As founders, Board Members, and long-standing supporters, their vision played a defining role in shaping Mokolodi into a place where conservation and education continue to thrive in the heart of Botswana.

Following this transition, the Board is now chaired by Ramachandran Ottapathu, with Vidya Sanooj serving as Vice Chair and Executive Committee Chairperson.

Conservation and Education

To sustain its conservation efforts and support the work of the Mokolodi Education Centre, the reserve offers a range of fee-based tourism activities, including game drives, rhino tracking, conferencing facilities, and accommodation.

The income generated from these activities plays a vital role in subsidising conservation initiatives and educational programmes, while providing visitors with meaningful and memorable experiences in the heart of Botswana’s natural heritage.
